Kahaani: Partial Music Review

If a single word could be enough to describe this album, it would be: "haunting". The songs, beautiful in their own way, have an incredibly melancholic tinge to them which I find so difficult to escape. I don't know if I enjoy sad songs to be honest; my skin isn't as thick is it ought to be. And yet, this album keeps pulling me towards it, and I'm surprised, very pleasantly at that, that Vishal and Shekhar have managed to make that happen. Their history of creating light-hearted, biscuit-feed-like light tunes (Anjaana Anjaani, IHLS, Dus, Break Ke Baad), would never have let me feel that they would manage to escape the category. Don't get me wrong, they've written sad songs before... but Kahaani is serious. More serious than I've ever heard them sound. Cheers to these three songs that, I feel, made it happen:

Aami Shotti Bolchi- JAZZ. GOOOOD JAZZ. I'm not a co-no-see-air of jazz music, neither am I a flailing amateur fanatic of it. But I like the way it sounds, especially when it sounds good. The percussion, saxo, sounds soo sexy. The shift into rock zone during the chorus is interesting as well. Usha Utthap does not fail to amaze, though. She doesn't really do anything that she hasn't shown us she could do, but good gosh, she is maahir and whatever she does. The deepness of her voice is absolutely perfect for this song, and her voice brings to the song the overall taunting, teasing, intriguing mood. "Kolkata khwaahishon, armaanon ka achaar hain", "Kolkata you sexy".. Abhijit Nalani knows how to raise them eyebrows haha. I enjoyed the lyrics, the Hindi-English-Bengali mix is smartly used, and kudos =)

Meri Kahaani... wow. This song is very much like a leech... you know its on you, and sucking your blood, but  removing it from you doesn't seem as simple a task as one would imagine. I don't intend to make the imagery as sickly as it is, but I can't find a better word to describe this song. There is a very eerie sadness I hear in this song, and it doesn't fail to make me think of memories I wish would just get transferred away from me in the form of earwax. But I can't stop thinking about this song, for some reason. The vocals, to begin with, I found mindblowing. KK and Shreya both, don't do anything earth-shattering.. in fact, both have made much more wonderful solos to their names; but they do this song too much justice. The softness, the pain, the contemplation, the sensitivity, all so fluidly conveyed through vocals. The tune is an interesting one as well... from "chup reh kar bhi yeh...chup hi rehti hain", the song starts off as a neutral, amicable tune. Then it takes a small tumult with "kabhi aankhon se kar ke ishaara"... and then it unexpectedly pushes you, a bit too roughly than one would like, with "mera inn raahon se hain rishta koi...". I know this is way too dramatic for my own good, but this is the only way I feel, when I listen to this song. And I can't. Stop. Thinking about it.
P.S. I love it.

and then there is Tore Bina. First of all, I just want to spew love for Sukhwinder Singh. I do admit that I did not enjoy his voice some years ago... the hoarseness, or something about it, I really don't know, put me off. But my oh my is he talented. His voice is commanding- you hear him out and out. He can sing circles. The softness of his voice in this song is far too welcoming, and the interesting technique of letting a male singer sing in the female perspective, I've always been a fan of. I've been a fan of it when Kailash Kher did it, and I like it in SS's voice as well.. The lyrics are so easy to relate with as well, for anyone, that is. I'm sure, at some point, everyone has wanted to say to certain someones, "roothungi(a), sataaungi(a), suno ab ke ghar jo aaoge; tose hi tore shiqaayatein karoon".. the pain from losing someone, and the naive innocence of admitting that you believe he or she will return eventually.. so transparent, so wonderfully said. And sung. And written. Waah ji waah.

Thoughts on: Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.

Recently watched Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., a long time after I watched that movie for the first time in 2007.

I think my becoming older has definitely helped me appreciate this movie MUCH more. I really like it! It's so mature haha, its very well done.

Reema Kagti's direction is definitely to watch for, and obviously she went well with the cast. Everyone was great, but the people who really stick with you after the end of the movie are Shabana Azmi (obviously), KK Menon, Sandhya Mridul, and Boman Irani =D
Boman is SOOO endearing. You can't help feel for the guy, and simultaneously you can't help falling in love with his spirit/zest for love =D its just about the most heartwarming role I've watched lately.

KK Menon is good throughout the movie as the apprehensive, traditional, introvert dude, but omg, the minute he gets high and lets loose in Sajna Ji Vari Vari- EPICCC. LOVEEEDD him =D he was INSANE, and it wasn't like, stupid drunk acting haha, it was believable, and hella funny. SOOO much kudos to him for this part LOL

Dia Mirza was annoying frankly haha. Her role is just.. I dunno, sadface.
Minisha Lamba and Abhay Deol were ridiculously wasted IMO, their role could have been SOOO much more meaty, but their stupid superpower thing ruined it for me =/ BUT their dance is increddible.

Overall, I love this movie to bits =D I'd definitely recommend it for a chill Saturday afternoon session, but if you're expecting a heavy emotional drama, or something to seriously make you laugh, don't watch it haha
